With the American population living longer, seniors' oral health has become an important issue, as has the widespread problem of elder abuse. Every year more than 2.5 million older Americans may be victims of elder abuse, and in some cases dentists serve as the first line of defense, according to a report in the May/June 2005 issue of General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

Dental Implants
The Issue of Facial Collapse
The primary reason people start to look so much older when they lose their teeth is bone loss. Natural teeth stimulate the bone in the jaw, keeping it dense and healthy. When the teeth are lost, bone immediately starts to atrophy. As it melts away, it causes a variety of problems. Dental implants are the ideal solution to prevent facial collapse. The implant stimulates the jaw much like the original tooth did, keeping the jawbone healthy and whole. When implants aren't possible, it's vital that dentures fit well so they can do their part in preventing bone loss.

Dentistry for Seniors
Senior Dental Care is Different
Just as our bodies transition as we advance in age, our teeth and gums do also. Decades of plaque buildup, as well as drinking coffee, tea, or using tobacco, can make teeth become dark. Ask us about procedures that can treat these issues. Reduced saliva flow is sometimes a side effect of certain medications. There are products that can ease this condition. Your fillings are aging, too, which can lead to weakening or cracking. Regular check-ups will allow us to stay on top of your existing fillings. Gum disease and root decay can be prevalent in seniors. Daily cleaning and good nutrition are vital for healthy gums. If your gums become red, begin to bleed, or your teeth start to feel loose, contact us immediately.
